Beaches & Swimming on the Princes' Islands

Yes, you can swim on the Princes' Islands — and the water is some of the clearest near Istanbul. Here are the best beaches and beach clubs, island by island.

Ask an Istanbulite where to swim near the city and many will point to the Princes’ Islands. Away from the busy urban shoreline, the water here turns a clear Aegean blue, and every visitable island has somewhere to take a dip — from organised beach clubs to rocky platforms you reach on foot.

When is the swimming season?

The sea is comfortably warm for swimming from roughly June to September, peaking in July and August. May and early October can be pleasant on a sunny day, but the water is cooler and many beach clubs run a shorter season.

Beach clubs vs. free swimming spots

Beach clubs charge a day fee and give you loungers, umbrellas, showers, changing rooms and a café — ideal for a relaxed day. Public spots and rocky coves are free and more natural, but bring your own water, shade and towel.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim on the Princes' Islands?+

Yes — swimming is one of the main reasons Istanbulites visit. The islands have beach clubs and public swimming spots with some of the clearest water near the city. The season runs from around June to September, with July and August the warmest.

Which Princes' Island has the best beaches?+

Kınalıada has the most accessible beaches, just a short walk from the ferry. Büyükada has well-known beach clubs, Heybeliada offers quiet forested coves, and tiny Sedef Island has a sandy shore backed by pines — arguably the nicest for a pure beach day.

Are there beach clubs on the Princes' Islands?+

Yes. Büyükada, Heybeliada and Kınalıada all have beach clubs offering sun loungers, changing facilities, showers and cafés for a day fee. They're the easiest option if you want comfort and amenities.

Is the water clean enough to swim in?+

The waters around the Princes' Islands are noticeably clearer than the city shoreline, which is why they're a popular summer swim. Stick to established beach clubs and known swimming spots for the cleanest, safest bathing.
